What do you do with old clothes when they’re too worn to wear or donate? I make blankets for animal shelters.

Animal shelters have no budget for blankets or other comfort items. These items can help animals relax and stay warm and healthy, which in turn makes them appear and act more adoptable. Most of my pets have come from shelters, so supporting these organizations is important to me.

I’m also an environmentalist who wears t-shirts and jeans to death. Second hand shops don’t want them, but I can’t bring myself to throw them away. So I’ve solved two problems by sewing old clothes into visually appealing blankets perfectly sized for cats and dogs.

My grandmother gave me all her yarn. I put it to use by making fashionable bears for children in need.

I give these bears to the The Mother Bear Project, a nonprofit which sends hand knit bears to organizations in Africa. The bears are handed out to children with HIV/AIDS who are often ostracized within their communities and are in need of a friend to confide in.

It’s great to get creative with the bears’ colors schemes and sweater styles. (I quite like stripes.) Each has a personality. I also enjoy setting them up in photoshoots before mailing them off.
