To experiment with materials and methods to create an alphabet based upon one concept.
I wanted to make an alphabet that highlighted the tactile and aesthetic quality of women’s Victorian fashion. I started with a broad exploration of materials and techniques. A second exploration narrowed the materials and the approach. I decided to use ribbons, feathers and lace; materials that would be used to embellish a dress. The final alphabet is comprised of free standing characters, each designed to be a distinct personality. The characters will not work together to form words since each wants to be the center of attention. However, using the same methods and materials, words can be created quite elegantly.
